Francine's Friends Part of 36th Annual Fight Cancer Day

At a news conference on October 28th at the Kroger Marketplace store on Dupont Road, the Kroger Co.'s Central Division leaders announced results of the 36th annual "Kroger Fight Cancer Day 2014".

The 2014 campaign was a collaborative effort involving Kroger, the American Cancer Society, Cancer Services of Northeast Indiana, and Francine’s Friends.

“Francine’s Friends is especially proud to partner with Kroger, CSNI, and ACS in Fight Cancer Day! Our program got its start with a ribbon  cutting at the Scotts/Kroger store on North Clinton and continues to bring the coach to area Kroger stores in the Fort Wayne area,” explained Francine’s Friends Board President, Sharon Simmons.

Kroger customers and associates were offered the opportunity to sign or write messages to loved ones on large Fight Cancer Day banners hung in all 15 stores. Volunteers from ACS, CSNI, ad Francine's Friends, many of whom are cancer survivors worked in stores across the region in support of the event.

This year’s money was collected in various ways. Kroger donated $50,000 which represented three percent of sales on Wednesday, October 8. Another $19,855.79 came from Kroger customers who donated $1, $3 or $5 in cash on two separate Sundays. Kroger also made a direct contribution of $12,500 to Francine’s Friends. In all, $82,355.79 was raised, and over the course of 36 years, more than $4.7 million has been raised for area cancer organizations.

We are HAPPY!

Byron Health Center and Breast Diagnostic Center announced that their joint entry finished in third place in the national 2014 Pink Glove Dance for Breast Cancer Awareness video contest. Featuring more than 150 local healthcare workers dancing to Pharrell Williams’ hit song “Happy,” the 90-second video was shot in several iconic Fort Wayne locations and produced by Punch Films. Winners were determined by an online vote.

“We are thrilled the video reached so many people to emphasize the importance of early breast cancer detection,” said Dr. William Petty, BDC medical director. In addition to the $2,500 prize money presented to Francine’s Friends on October 2, the all-volunteer organization also received $1,000 from Byron Health Center and $1,000 from Breast Diagnostic Center to help fulfill its mission to provide screening mammography for all women in northeast Indiana.

"Today our magic coach video came in third in our category for the Pink Glove Dance!" exclaimed Sharon Simmons, board president of Francine's Friends. "Asher Advertising, Punch Films, Byron Health, and BDC all deserve our special thanks for the hard work they devoted to making our first experience with the Pink Glove so memorable," she continued. "Thank you to everyone who reached out to all your friends, relatives, and professional contacts and had them voting for us each and every day — it was amazing!  I know I had a wonderful time being a part of this video and I hope that everyone else involved enjoyed it as much as I did!  We are HAPPY!! "

The locally produced video can be seen by clicking the link here. The Pink Glove Dance campaign was created in 2009 by Medline Industries, a manufacturer and distributor of healthcare supplies, to honor healthcare workers and their patients.

2014 Health Care Awards Honorees Announced

Greater Fort Wayne Business Weekly recently announced 36 health care professionals and organizations to be recognized at an awards ceremony September 11. The honorees were selected from a record number of nominations and were chosen by the judges because they exemplify the significant contributions one individual or organization can make to the quality of health care for all in northeast Indiana.

Francine's Friends is thrilled to be included in the list of honorees. "We are so excited and very happy to have been selected as an honoree for the Greater Fort Wayne Business Weekly Health Care Awards!" said Sharon Simmons, Francine's Friends board president. "On behalf of the entire board of Francine’s Friends, we thank you very much for honoring us and our mission to make screening mammography available to any woman in our community regardless of their ability to pay."

The list of honorees includes 15 who will also be honored in a specific category of health care. Those honorees will be announced at the event, which will also feature Mike Packnett, president and CEO, of Parkview Health as the Keynote speaker.

“This year we saw a large number of nominations, each and every one of whom are deserving of recognition and our gratitude for helping to keep northeast Indiana healthy,” said Terry Ward, COO, KPC Media Group Inc., which published Greater Fort Wayne Business Weekly.  “The judges were charged with determining 12 category winners, but when faced with so many outstanding candidates, they recommended 24 additional professionals be recognized. These unsung heroes receive the gratitude of their patients everyday, but are rarely recognized professionally. By honoring these professionals we are recognizing the important role quality health care plays in a community’s growth.”

The honorees will be featured in the September 12–18 edition of Greater Fort Wayne Business Weekly and honored at a breakfast awards ceremony on September 11, 2014 at the Landmark Centre from 7:30 AM to 9:30 AM. LaGrange County Community Foundation supports Francine's Friends

Laura Lemings, director of the LaGrange County Community Foundation, presented a check from the foundation’s “Circle of Love” campaign to Francine’s Friends mobile mammography program. Receiving the donation are Debi Kennedy, community outreach coordinator of the Parkview Comprehensive Cancer Center (and coach scheduler for the coach for Francine's Friends), along with Rob Myers, president of Parkview LaGrange Hospital.

The donation will help to cover the cost of screening mammograms through Francine’s Friends for women who might otherwise have put their mammogram off because of financial constraints.

Each February the LaGrange County Community Foundation holds its “Circle of Love” campaign. For a gift of five dollars or more, the “Circle of Love” sends a valentine to the person of the donor’s choice, letting them know a gift has been made in his or her honor.

“We truly appreciate the ‘Circle of Love’s’ continuing support. Since the annual campaign first began, Francine’s Friends has received over five thousand dollars,” said Kennedy. “Nearly forty women have been able to get a screening mammogram thanks to the ‘Circle’s’ continuing support.”

“Francine’s Friends has been a natural fit for the monies raised through ‘Circle of Love’ valentines,” said Lemings. “What better opportunity to provide loved ones a valentine with a lasting impact than helping to remove a financial barrier to a test that can save a woman’s life.”

Francine’s Friends mobile mammography program serves a twelve county area in northeastern Indiana. “Through donations like this one,” continued Kennedy, “women who have no insurance, a high deductible, or are without the financial resources needed, are able to receive an annual mammogram, making it more likely to identify a problem early, when treatment is most effective.”
